Boxfit, Boxercise and Box HIIT in Manchester: Which Class You Actually Want

You do not want to become a boxer. You want the workout.

That is the most normal reason there is to walk into a boxing gym, and it is why most people search "boxfit" or "boxercise" rather than "boxing club". The trouble is that those two words mean something different at every gym in Manchester that uses them, so you cannot tell from a timetable what you are actually booking.

Here is the honest starting point: Corner HQ does not run a class called Boxfit or Boxercise. We run four that do the job those words are pointing at, and they are not interchangeable. This is which one you want, what happens in it, and where a proper studio boxercise class would suit you better than anything we do.

The short answer

If you only read one thing:

If you wantBookWhen it runs
In and out fast Box&Burn 35 Friday 17:15
The hardest cardio here Box HIIT Mon, Wed, Thu 18:15
Someone holding pads for you Box HIIT Pads Tuesday 18:15
Circuits and conditioning Box Endurance Saturday 10:35
A class before work Box HIIT, or Box&Burn 35 Wednesday 06:15 and 07:15
To learn the technique first Beginner’s Boxing Mon 19:15, Fri 18:00
To train when you cannot get here Corner On Demand, in the app Any time, anywhere

Everything below is the detail behind that table.

What "boxfit" and "boxercise" actually mean

Not much, and that is the problem.

Neither word describes a fixed thing. In general use, both point at a group fitness class built out of boxing movements, usually music-led, often with no heavy bag, sometimes with pads, frequently with no technique coaching at all. The goal is the calorie burn, not the jab. You will find versions of it in leisure centres, studios and the group exercise timetable of nearly every big gym in the city.

What both words reliably do not mean: contact, sparring, competing, or getting hit. Nobody is going to make you fight in a boxfit class, here or anywhere else.

So the real question is not boxfit versus boxercise. It is whether you want the studio version of this or the boxing gym version, because they are genuinely different products and both are legitimate.

The studio version is choreographed, set to music, low on correction and high on volume. If that is what you are picturing, and you want to move for 45 minutes without anyone commenting on your feet, that is a real thing and Manchester does it well. Book that. We are not it.

The boxing gym version, which is what happens here, means real heavy bags, gloves on, and a coach who will walk over mid-round and move your elbow. The workout is at least as hard. You will just also, accidentally, learn to punch properly.

The four fitness-led classes at Corner HQ

Box HIIT

Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 18:15. Also Wednesdays at 06:15. Coaches: Alisa B on Mondays, Cavan M on Wednesdays, Tomas F or Linval V on Thursdays.

This is the default answer for most people, and the busiest class we run in the evening. Bag work in intervals, floor and conditioning work between rounds, 45 minutes no let-up. If you have done any kind of HIIT class before, the shape will be familiar; the difference is that the work intervals are on a heavy bag rather than a rower or a set of dumbbells.

It is the hardest cardio in the building. Not the hardest class, which is arguable, but the one that will have you genuinely struggling for breath fastest.

Monday is the busiest of the three. Wednesday evening is often the quietest.

Box HIIT Pads

Tuesdays at 18:15, with Marvin Tomlinson.

Box HIIT with pad work in it, which means someone is holding for you and calling combinations rather than you working a bag alone. That changes the class more than it sounds like it should: you cannot coast, because a person is standing in front of you waiting for the next shot.

It is also, measurably, the best attended class on the timetable. More people book this than book anything else we run, including the beginners class. Take that as the recommendation it is, and book it early in the week.

Box&Burn 35

Fridays at 17:15, with Chad O. Also Wednesdays at 07:15.

Thirty-five minutes. Boxing and conditioning, compressed, with the warm-up and the talking cut out.

It is the newest thing on the timetable, and it exists for the obvious reason: an hour after work is a real barrier and thirty-five minutes is not. If what is stopping you booking is the length of the commitment rather than the effort, this is the one.

Box Endurance (Circuits)

Saturdays at 10:35, with Jerry Krylov or Lorna D.

The most conditioning-led class we run. Circuit format, stations, boxing in among the rest of the work rather than the whole of it. Attendance roughly tripled when it moved to the later Saturday slot, which tells you what people actually wanted from their Saturday morning.

If you like circuits and you want boxing to be part of your week rather than the point of it, this is your class.

Where the other classes sit, so you do not book the wrong one

The rest of the timetable is boxing rather than boxing-shaped fitness. Worth knowing so you can avoid it, or find it:

ClassWhat it actually is
Beginner’s Boxing Technique from scratch. Monday 19:15 and Friday 18:00, both with Chad O
Just Box Traditional skills-based boxing. Tuesday and Thursday 19:15
Just Box (Female Only) The same, women only, Wednesdays
Ring Craft Saturday 12:00. This is where sparring happens, and it asks for experience
Open Gym Train on your own, no coach, book a two hour slot

Two names you may have seen on our own website and will not find on the booking page: Inferno and Fundamentals. Neither has run in months. If you came here looking for one of them, Box HIIT and Beginner's Boxing are the nearest live equivalents.

Do you need to do the beginners class first?

No, and most people doing this for fitness do not.

The fitness classes assume nothing. You can walk into Box HIIT having never thrown a punch, and a fair share of the room on any given Monday is in exactly that position. Nobody is being assessed.

That said, an hour of hitting a bag with technique nobody has corrected is an hour of building a habit you will later have to unlearn, and it is the fastest route to sore wrists. If you think you will still be doing this in three months, start with Beginner's Boxing and then move across. If you are here for six weeks of cardio before summer, go straight to Box HIIT and enjoy yourself.

The honest bit about mornings

There are exactly two classes before 9am, both on Wednesday: Box HIIT at 06:15 and Box&Burn 35 at 07:15.

Both are quiet. On a typical Wednesday morning there are not too many people in the room, against 10+ in the same class on a weekday evening.

Whether that is a problem depends entirely on you. If you want the energy of a full room, come in the evening. If the idea of near-private coaching for the price of a class appeals, Wednesday morning is the best value on the timetable and almost nobody has noticed yet.

If you need to train before work more than once a week, though, we cannot currently give you that, and you should know it before you buy credits.

There is an answer to that, and it is the next section.

When you cannot get to Corner HQ

The timetable is the timetable. Some weeks you are working late, some weeks you are in another city, and in January the 6pm class is the last place you want to be.

Corner On Demand is the classes without the room. It is a library of coached boxing sessions in the Corner app, on iOS and Android, run on your phone, your tablet, or cast to a TV. Three categories balancing cardio, strength and technical work, plus an academy section for learning the craft rather than burning through a session.

The coaches are real people with names on the page. Paulina is a Thai boxing fighter. Liam is a former pro who was a sparring partner for Tyson Fury. Abi is a strength and conditioning coach.

Three things are worth knowing before you dismiss it as a workout video:

You are not training alone. Every session runs a real-time leaderboard, so you are in with everyone else doing that class, wherever they are. This is the same idea as the wall at Corner HQ, and it is the reason people who live nowhere near a Corner gym still turn up to a Tuesday class.

You do not need any equipment. No bag, no gloves, no trackers. If you have a spare two metres of floor, you can do it.

It costs £9.99 a month, or £71.99 a year, after a 30 day free trial. No sign up fee, cancel whenever. That is less than a single class here, which we are aware of and would rather you knew. And if you take Premium Membership at Corner HQ, you already have it: Premium includes Corner Premium, so the whole On Demand library comes with the gym.

If you own the trackers, the numbers follow you

You do not need Corner trackers for any of this. But if you own a pair, they work at home exactly as they do here, and when you walk into Corner HQ they connect and your session lands in the same history as everything else. One set of numbers, whether you trained in the gym, in a hotel room, or in your kitchen.

That holds at any Corner gym in the world, not just this one. Walk in with your own trackers and they connect there too, and the session joins the same history. Which is a genuinely useful thing to own if you travel.

Trackers are from £139, and there is a bundle at from £199 that adds a year of Corner Premium.

One thing to be clear about, because the two products are easy to confuse: buying the trackers gets you every tracking feature for your own training with no subscription attached, and it does not include the On Demand classes or Premium features. Those are the separate membership above. If you want both, the £199 bundle is the cheaper route than buying them apart.

And the honest limit. A class on a screen cannot see that your left hand drops when you get tired, and it will never walk over and move your elbow. That is the entire reason to come to Hoyle Street. Use On Demand for the weeks you cannot, not instead of the weeks you can.

What makes it different from a boxercise class, in both directions

In our favour, specifically:

  • Real heavy bags, and gloves are provided. Six bags, plus water bag and a speed ball, in a room with a full-sized ring in it. You do not need to buy anything to attend your first class.

  • The coaches are boxing coaches. They will fix your stance in a fitness class, unprompted. Many members love this and some find it mildly irritating.

  • Small rooms. Eight to twelve people in a typical session, not forty.

  • Every session is tracked. More on that below, because for a fitness buyer it is the actual differentiator.

Against us, honestly:

  • It costs more than a leisure centre class, and considerably more than the group exercise timetable at a big-box gym you already pay for.

  • There is no choreography and no playlist-driven routine. If the appeal of boxercise for you is that it feels like a dance class with gloves, this will feel blunt.

  • It is one room on an industrial estate. No pool, no sauna, no juice bar.

  • The timetable is evening-weighted. See above.

If two or three of those against-us points landed, a studio boxercise class is genuinely the better buy and there is no hard feeling in saying so. We also wrote a guide to the boxing clubs in Manchester city centre, including the ones that are not us.

The part where the workout produces a number

Corner HQ is run by the people who make Corner's punch trackers, and every session here includes them at no extra cost. For someone training for fitness rather than for boxing, this is the bit worth understanding, because it solves the standard problem with a class-based workout: you cannot tell whether this week was better than last week.

Two small sensors go on under your wraps, one per hand. A coach does it with you the first time. There is no app to download, nothing to pair, and nothing to set up.

What comes out of it:

  • Punch count, speed and power, per session, saved to your account.

  • KO Points. Every punch scores between 1 and 10 on speed, power and output combined. It is deliberately not a raw power score, because head to head competition between people of different sizes does not work. A faster boxer throwing more shots scores the same as a bigger one throwing fewer.

  • Movement Points, so the floor and conditioning work in a HIIT class registers too. You are not invisible during the parts that are not punching.

  • Calories, for the people who want that number and no other.

  • A monthly leaderboard on the wall, which is cumulative across the month, so it rewards turning up rather than being the strongest person in the room.

The trackers at HQ are also calibrated more sensitively than the original consumer version (V1), so tired punches in the last round still register. The moment you feel most like you are failing is the moment the system is most careful to record.

In practice most people stop watching the wall after a fortnight and start watching their own numbers from last month. That is the intended outcome.

What it costs

If you are new, one number matters more than the rest:

Three classes for £25.

That is the introductory offer, and it is the right way to test this, because one class tells you nothing. The first is a blur, the second is where you find out you can do it, and the third is where you decide.

One catch worth knowing: the offer lives in the Credits section of the booking page and only appears once you have created a Corner account. Make the account first, then look in Credits.

After that, Corner HQ runs on credits. One credit is one class. No contract, no joining fee.

PricePer class
New member intro£25 for 3£8.33
1 credit£18£18.00
5 credits£75£15.00
10 credits£125£12.50
36 credits£350£9.72
Premium Membership£110/monthUnlimited
Corner On Demand£9.99/monthApp only

Premium Membership includes Corner Premium, so the full On Demand library comes with it. On Demand on its own is for people training at home.

A credit buys any class on the timetable, so the 35 minute Box&Burn costs the same as the hour. Packs of 5 and 10 are valid for 90 days, the 36 pack for a year. A credit also covers a two hour Open Gym slot, which is useful later.

Premium Membership at £110 a month is unlimited classes, unlimited Open Gym, and Corner Premium included, which is the full On Demand library and every premium feature in the app. So a Premium member does not pay for On Demand separately: the gym and the at-home classes are one membership. Places are limited. It is still not the thing to buy first, and if you are booking a fitness class twice a week the 10 pack is cheaper.

If you are on credits rather than Premium, On Demand is its own thing at £9.99 a month or £71.99 a year with a 30 day trial. It buys the app classes, not the room. The credits are for the coaching, the app is for the days you cannot get here.

Practical things

Bring: yourself, water, normal gym kit, trainers, and a padlock. There are male and female changing rooms with lockers and you supply the lock. This catches nearly everyone out exactly once.

Gloves are free. Do not buy any for your first class. Wraps are the one thing worth owning, and reception sells Corner Wraps and Corner Quickwraps; the Quickwraps go on in seconds and are the easier option while you are new. When you do want your own kit, here is what is actually worth buying.

Book ahead and pay online. You cannot pay cash at the door for a single session, and classes do fill. Cancel more than 12 hours before and it costs you nothing; later than that, or a no-show, may cost you the credit.

Finding us: Unit 1, Hoyle Street, M12 6HG, on the Hoyle Street Industrial Estate where Hoyle Street meets the Mancunian Way. About 8 minutes' walk from Piccadilly, and there is free parking on site, which this close to the centre is close to unheard of. It does not look like a gym from the outside. You have the right address.

Who this is not for

  • You want a music-led, choreographed studio class. Different product, and a good one. Not this.

  • You want the cheapest boxing-style workout in Manchester. You will find it, and it will not be here. Corner On Demand at £9.99 a month is the cheap answer we do have, and it is honestly a different product.

  • You need to train before work most days. Two morning slots a week, both Wednesday. On Demand covers the other mornings.

  • You are not in Manchester at all. Then none of the timetable above is any use to you, and the app is the whole of what Corner can offer: coached classes, live leaderboards, £9.99 a month, anywhere.

  • You want a gym with a pool. One room, a ring, six bags.

Booking one

Three steps. Create a Corner account, open Credits, and the 3 for £25 will be sitting there if you are new. Then pick a class from the table at the top.

If you are not sure which, book Box HIIT on a Monday or Box HIIT Pads on a Tuesday. Those are the two the most people come back to.
